Deep Cleaning Your Short-Term Rental Property
If your property is getting great occupancy rates, congratulations! That means you’re doing a lot right.
Now that things are moving along smoothly, you probably want to do everything you can to keep those occupancy rates (and your ratings) high.
We’re going to share a little secret to help you avoid a common mistake made by hosts: your guests are holding you to hotel-level cleanliness standards.
In the hospitality industry, cleanliness is an absolute must. Think about it… when you’re on vacation and enter your accommodations for the first time, the details matter! You notice everything. How do you feel if you see something like a stray hair or a stained sheet?
Cleanliness issues are one of the most frequent Airbnb guest complaints.
Guests seem to notice all those little things that hosts often look right past! But you can’t afford to ignore them. To earn those 5-star reviews and enjoy continued success, you need to make sure your home is always impeccable.
But I have my place cleaned between every guest!
Yes, it’s true that your home gets a cleaning between guests, whether you hire a crew or handle it yourself.
That’s a quick clean, what’s known in the industry as a “turnover service.” Basically, your apartment gets cleaned as much as possible in the 1-2 hours allotted, which usually means:
- Sweeping and mopping floors
- Vacuuming carpets
- Changing the bedsheets and towels
- Tidying the kitchen, wiping counters and stove top, putting away dishes
- Cleaning the bathrooms
- Taking out trash
- Wiping tables and dressers
But no matter how careful you think your turnovers are, dirt and grime still have a way of building up over time! And with so many people coming and going, things are bound to get scuffed, ripped, or broken.
That’s why it’s so important to schedule deep cleanings after a set number of guests. At Angel Host, we recommend thorough deep cleanings every 15-20 stays.
It’s time for a deep cleaning
Bust out those cleaning supplies and some elbow grease! A deep cleaning goes beneath the surface, to tackle the tasks that can’t be done between every guest but contribute to the overall cleanliness of the property.
You know your annual spring cleaning? That’s the kind of top-to-bottom cleaning we’re talking about here.
Deep cleaning is all about focusing attention on the places that usually get neglected. That means moving furniture and appliances, pulling out all the drawers, stripping the beds, and searching high and low for dust, cobwebs, hair, stains, and any other “traces” of prior guests. You want your place to sparkle!
Your deep cleaning is also a great opportunity to declutter, replace batteries, and check for anything in need of repair. Are all the doors and windows sliding smoothly? Blinds still working? Any broken dishes? Nonstick pans scratched and peeling?
During your deep cleaning, you’ll examine everything in your home and either clean, repair, or replace it.
To help you make sure you don’t miss anything, we’ve created a room-by-room deep cleaning checklist. Use it to help you get in the right mindset to take a systematic approach.
That way, the job won’t feel too overwhelming and you’ll quickly get your home in the right shape to keep welcoming guests!
